What are the common lung complications associated with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)?
CLL can affect breathing and lung function in several ways. The most common lung-related issues include:
• Shortness of breath, which may develop gradually or suddenly
• Fluid buildup in the lining of the lungs (pleural effusion)
• Enlarged lymph nodes that can press on blood vessels or lymph vessels in the lungs
• Pathologic leukemic bronchopulmonary infiltration (LBPI) - a rare condition where leukemia cells collect in or near the lungs These complications typically don't occur until CLL reaches an advanced stage or if left untreated. Some people may also experience:
• Breathing difficulties during humid weather
• Shortness of breath due to autoimmune hemolytic anemia (affects about 10% of patients)
• Difficulty completing previously manageable tasks
If you notice any changes in your breathing or persistent shortness of breath lasting more than a month, especially with a cough, it's important to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare team.
