I had learned that medicines can control those bad cells and after the cells mutate the control is lost. The good news is that there are many types of medications that use different means to "control" the bad cells. I take a medication for my leukemia. I know the medication is good for 3 to 5 years or until the bad cells mutate.

Yes, a significant drop in platelet count (thrombocytopenia) can be one indication that Imatinib may not be working effectively for you. Sometimes Imatinib can stop working over time as CML cells become resistant to the drug.

If Imatinib resistance occurs, your doctor may either increase the Imatinib dose or switch you to a different TKI medication. Several alternative TKI medications are available if Imatinib isn't working well:

• Bosutinib (Bosulif)
• Ponatinib
• Asciminib
• Nilotinib (available as Tasigna or the newer Danziten)
• Dasatinib (Sprycel)

The newer formulation of Nilotinib (Danziten) has the advantage of being able to be taken with or without food, while most other TKIs must be taken on an empty stomach.
