Unlike other cancers that use stages to describe how far they've spread, CML is divided into phases based on the percentage of blast cells (immature white blood cells) in your blood and bone marrow.

In chronic phase, fewer than 10 percent of cells are blasts. This phase is the least aggressive, and symptoms may be mild or even unnoticed. Many people don't have any symptoms at all during this phase.

The good news is that chronic phase CML typically responds very well to treatment with medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which can help prevent the leukemia from progressing to more advanced phases.
