Ultrasounds can show whether leukemia cells have spread to organs like the spleen, liver, or kidneys, and can detect if lymph nodes are swollen. These scans are particularly helpful for examining the spleen, which sits on the upper left side of your stomach and can become enlarged when leukemia cells build up in it.
During the procedure, a technician will place gel on your skin and move a handheld device over the area to create images. You may need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the test, or depending on what's being examined, you might be asked to drink water beforehand so your bladder is full.
