- Most people in blast phase survive an average of 7 to 10 months after diagnosis
- Overall survival is generally less than 12 months
- About 1% to 5% of people in chronic phase progress to blast phase each year
Certain factors can increase the risk of reaching blast phase, including:
- Not receiving TKI (targeted therapy) treatment
- Low platelet counts
- Being over age 60
- Certain genetic mutations Treatment options for blast phase CML do exist, including switching or adding TKI medications, chemotherapy, or palliative care to improve quality of life. A splenectomy (spleen removal) or clinical trials may also be considered.
