Congratulations Dianne on your remission. When I won the battle with aml, anything that was “off” health wise, would get me to thinking relapse. As time went by and got used to the new normal, I started forgetting about leukemia and focused on living to the fullest and accepting fatigue when it comes. Congratulations to you again
Do you feel well?
Thanks so much for all that helpful information! I’m also taking Acyclovir but just a half dose than I was before remission. I have had the shingles vaccine like you so I pray I don’t get shingles after having the vaccine. My oncologist told me to get all vaccines so I’ve had new Covid booster, flu, pneumonia, & RSV. I did have a mild case of pneumonia a month ago even after being vaccinated. But it was mild & cleared up in a week by very strong antibiotics (no hospitalization). I got to remission without having a transplant. I was eligible but decided against it because of all possibilities of side effects & GVHD. Plus I’m a widow & didn’t have any family or friends who could take care of me after the transplant.
I pray this remission lasts for years because I’m slowly becoming the person I was before cancer entered my life. I still have some days of fatigue but I can recover quicker than before. I lost 30 pounds between my diagnosis & my last chemo infusion so my doctor’s always telling me to eat more. He says I don’t eat enough protein. When I go for lab tests my Dr. also tells me I’m anemic. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
Congrats on remission, Dianne!!! For me after finally getting into remission, I had/have to still only take Jakafi which is more for GVHD and Acyclovir. I learned after my new doc took me off Acyclovir that had I stayed on it, I may not have come down with shingles despite being vaccinated. I suggest you ensure all vacs are up to date, don't ignore any symptoms that persist longer than a few days, monitor weight, be careful of winter coughs and illnesses. My treatments had long term impact on lungs, so getting bronchitis is dangerous for me. Have had each of last two winters. Your oncologist should tell you what to be most cognizant of for signs to go and see her/him. Hope this helps a bit.
