I alway thought that those chemo treatments use chemicals that attack both the bad and good cells. I afte taking those chemicals and feeling ill is a common affect. The damage to a person's organs is going to happen from the chemicals. The explanation, "Yes, muscle and joint pain can occur as side effects during leukemia treatment?" This tells me that damage is expected and you should have been informed before the "treatment."
My son’s bone marrow transplant lead to chronic graft vs host disease that we fought to control for over 4 years. His immune system attacked his joints, specifically his ankles , which lead to his muscles waisting away in his leg from the lack of rotation in his ankles. It caused him to walk like Frankenstein. To this day he wakes up hearing his ankles poop and he can feel bone rubbing on bone. Dispute intense physical therapy this ankles never moved and his legs are as big as my wrists. He’s learned to walk on the side of his feet which doesn’t show how frozen his ankles really are. I flew him around the country to “ the best of the best” orthopedic surgeons to see if someone could help but no one knew what to tell me. One doctor said all he could recommend was going into surgery and forcing the ankles loose but he said he wouldn’t do it as my son would likely end up with a “ drop foot” and be in leg braces the rest of his life.
If I weren’t so tired I could go on and on about the retributions of the GVHD and I may at another time but I’ll tell you it wreaked havoc on his entire body. Every organ and even his teeth. He is 34 now and doesn’t remember any of those days which I think the Lord made happen so he wasn’t scared for life but, I will tell you that “I” don’t forget one single day in those 9 years it took until they would finally consider him “ cured”. I sometimes feel very proud because I made several critical descions over those years, which his oncologists weren’t very happy with at the time, that actually saved his life ( they admitted this after all was over tests later). I feel like I can handle just about anything that comes at me or my children ( who are actually men now) and I can face it head on because I know how it was to deal with such a long and arduous battle with him. It’s strange how things work out. I just wish it was me that had to endure this right now and not him. On the other hand sometimes I ask myself if I really did him any favors. He suffers far more than anyone knows. Funny, he said that when his friends complain about not feeling well because of a cold or a pulled muscle he said he wants to ask them,” You know how you’re feeling right now? Well, that’s how I feel every day I wake up” but he doesn’t and he never complains even to me and when I ask him what’s hurting he just tells me he’s just tired. Maybe he’s hurting so much and has for so long that it’s something he’s learned to live with, maybe it’s just “normal” for him.
