What is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)?
ALL is a type of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow when blood cells begin growing and multiplying uncontrollably. It is the most common type of leukemia in children, particularly those under 5 years old. The risk decreases through the 20s and increases again after age 50. ALL affects slightly more males than females. There are two main subtypes of ALL:
• B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (about 75% of adult cases)
• T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia
These subtypes can be further classified based on specific genetic changes in the cancer cells. For example, 20-30% of adults with B-cell ALL have what's known as the Philadelphia chromosome, which is a genetic change where two pieces of DNA become linked together.
