A MyLeukemiaTeam Member asked a question 💭

After four years of watchful waiting my platelet count dropped below 40. The doctor prescribed Promacta and my insurance denied coverage. The doctor wants me to come back and discuss options. Has anyone gone through this themselves? Any advice?

I requested medication 12/23. I had no idea the medication was so expensive. One month of pills costs $15500 and my co-pay was $3400. The medical people requested a money grant form Leukemia Society and the money grant was approved for $4000. I do not know about the cost next year because the current government does not care about peoples health insurance so the cost may change? I think in your case there may be other medications which will be covered by your insurance. It is interesting this was not a back up plan and that the doctor failed to realize this until now? I have watched my doctor put in his prescription or a change and he is informed if my insurance accepts the drug? He had noted this and told me this in the office during my visit as he was entering the prescription. We are in the 21st century and I live in a county with only 7 stop lights but the doctors computer is connected to the internet. I think you will see you will be taken care of with a change in medication. Please ask your doctor why you were not informed in a more timely manner since this delay affected both your physical and mental health?

Has anyone experienced insurance denying coverage for Promacta after their platelet count dropped?

Insurance denials for leukemia medications are frustrating but common. Many insurance plans require prior authorization before they'll cover certain prescriptions. This means your doctor needs to submit detailed information about your diagnosis, treatment history, and why this medication is medically necessary for your specific situation.

Your doctor will need to provide:
- Your diagnosis and relevant health conditions
- Lab work showing your platelet count
- Information about any other treatments you've tried
- Why Promacta is medically necessary for you

The insurance company will have a medical specialist review this information before making a decision. Sometimes the initial denial is simply because they need more documentation from your doctor. When you meet with your doctor, ask if their office has a patient advocate or financial counselor who can help navigate the insurance approval process. Many medical centers have staff dedicated to helping with insurance matters and can work directly with your insurance company.

A MyLeukemiaTeam member shared: "My doctor's office helped me contact the manufacturer and they are helping me with the copay. You should have a patient advocate in your doctor's office who can help you with this."

If the denial stands after your doctor submits the prior authorization, you can appeal the decision. Your doctor can also discuss alternative medications that might be covered by your plan, or help you apply for patient assistance programs from the drug manufacturer.
