What happens during the consolidation phase of APL treatment after remission?

Consolidation therapy, also called post-remission therapy, begins after the induction phase successfully puts your APL into remission. This is the second phase of APL treatment.

The main goal of consolidation is to build on the initial success and destroy any remaining leukemia cells that survived the first phase. These lingering cells could potentially regrow and cause the cancer to come back if not eliminated.

The specifics of your consolidation therapy will depend on:
- Your risk classification (low-risk vs. high-risk APL)
- The likelihood of your leukemia returning
- Your overall health and other individual factors

After consolidation, you'll move into the maintenance phase, which uses lower doses of medication over a longer period (typically one to two years) to help keep you in remission and prevent recurrence.
