The spleen is a vital component of the lymphatic and immune systems located in the upper-left abdomen. Its primary functions include filtering blood, destroying old or damaged red blood cells, storing blood components (like platelets), producing white blood cells to combat infections, and recycling iron. This organ does a big job and sometimes the organ gets bigger to accomplish this task. My spleen is enlarged but I do not notice this issue because I think it is doing the job it is supposed to do and filtering out excess stuff.

Can new leukemia drugs help with an enlarged spleen in CMML?

For CMML specifically, newer leukemia drugs aren't typically the first approach for treating an enlarged spleen. The main treatments for spleen enlargement in CMML include:

* Radiation therapy to shrink the spleen
* Surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy)
* Chemotherapy drugs like Vidaza (azacitidine), Dacogen (decitabine), or Inqovi, which may help normalize blood cell counts and potentially reduce spleen size

These chemotherapy options are FDA-approved for CMML and may help with symptoms, though they don't cure the condition.

It's worth noting that the newer targeted therapies like TKIs (tyrosine kinase inhibitors) are primarily used for CML rather than CMML. If you're experiencing symptoms from an enlarged spleen, it's important to discuss with your doctor which treatment approach might work best for your specific situation.
