Hi Connie. Great question. I was curious & interested so I looked it up. Very well health.com has an excellent article that explains how it can affect one’s partner, up to 3 days following treatment. They give a list of things that person may experience. Also, informative info regarding the person that is having chemo..white blood cells, etc are affected and can increase one’s chances of an infection.

Intimacy isn’t the actual sex act ?
We don’t need the Release as much as we need to just feel loved held comforted.
Yes sex is wonderful.
But I’m not looking for wonderful.
During treatment I need more than anything to feel old familiar things.
My girlfriend chose my treatment time as an opportunity to find love elsewhere.
Unfortunately I relapsed multiple times and now 16 years later…
As a patient?
Yes sex would have been nice.
But understand
Our vision is affected by chemotherapy.
Nothing is normal.
Food is not normal
My only hint of normal is my partners touch ,voice .

A long hug from someone that I know loves me?
That’s what I needed.
Remember when goosebumps were the best?
I’d trade a goosebump over anything honestly

Managing intimacy while on Calquence (acalabrutinib) for CLL is something worth thinking through carefully, since the medication comes with side effects that can affect how you feel physically and emotionally.

Some side effects of Calquence that may impact intimacy include:

- Fatigue and body aches – These can reduce energy and interest in sexual activity
- Headaches and diarrhea – These can make intimacy uncomfortable or unappealing
- Low red and white blood cell counts – This can contribute to tiredness and general weakness
- Low platelet counts – This is an important one, as it can increase bleeding risk, so it's worth checking with your doctor about any physical activity, including sex

One practical tip: try timing any pain or nausea medication about an hour before intimacy, so it has time to kick in. Just be aware that some medications can interfere with sexual performance. Beyond the physical side, leukemia and its treatment can affect emotional wellbeing too. Changes in appearance, fatigue, and stress can all impact body image and desire.

As one MyLeukemiaTeam member shared, feeling unattractive due to treatment-related changes is very common — and very understandable.

Here are some broader strategies that may help:

- Talk to your oncologist about intimacy concerns — they can suggest options like lubricants for vaginal dryness or medications for erectile dysfunction
- Consider counseling or therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based approaches, especially if anxiety or low mood are playing a role
- Communicate openly with your partner about your needs, desires, and limitations
- Prioritize sleep — fatigue is a major libido dampener, and good sleep hygiene can make a real difference

Always check with your care team before making any changes, especially given Calquence's effect on platelet counts and bleeding risk.
