Is it safe to receive blood transfusions from COVID-19 vaccinated donors?
The COVID-19 vaccine does not affect DNA or cause cells to become cancerous. There is no scientific evidence linking the vaccine to increased leukemia risk or complications with blood transfusions. Common blood transfusion side effects may include:
- Fever (febrile reaction)
- Chills
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Allergic reactions (hives/skin changes)
- Shortness of breath
- Pain at injection site
- Blood pressure changes
These side effects are generally manageable and the benefits typically outweigh the risks when transfusions are needed for low blood counts.
