What chemotherapy drugs are commonly used for acute lymphoblastic leukemia?
Several chemotherapy medications are used to treat ALL, often in combination with each other. The specific drugs you receive depend on your treatment phase and individual situation.
Common chemotherapy drugs for ALL include:
* Adriamycin (doxorubicin)
* Cerubidine (daunorubicin)
* Neosar (cyclophosphamide)
* Trexall (methotrexate)
* Cytosar-U (cytarabine)
* Vincasar or Oncovin (vincristine)
* Elspar (asparaginase)
Steroids like Decadron (dexamethasone) and Deltasone (prednisone) are also frequently used, as they can kill leukemia cells in various ways.
Treatment typically happens in phases - induction therapy to kill most cancer cells, consolidation to destroy remaining cells, and maintenance therapy for a couple of years to help prevent relapse. Chemotherapy may also be delivered to the central nervous system if leukemia has spread there.
Newer drugs like Clolar (clofarabine) and Arranon (nelarabine) are also available, with Arranon specifically used for T-cell ALL.
