I have CLL and I was told I was going to live 5 years. I take medication that will be good at controlling those bad cells for 10 to 20 years. In the past my medication stated it was only good for 3 to 5 years. I see there are two medications which can control CMML and benefit your health. Doctors talk about "treatments" but I think this is chemo with ill affects to the whole body which can be stressful. All medications come with possible ill affects but the medication drugs mainly focuses on those bad cells. Our illness is a long term problem and another illness may be our big future problem. I had read that eating healthy and exercising is a benefit that assist in keeping a person's body healthy. Celebrating Long Life (CLL)

What is the outlook for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML)?

The prognosis for CMML varies based on several factors, but overall survival rates are modest compared to some other leukemias.

Survival Rates by CMML Type:

- Type 0 or 1 CMML: About 20% of people live for five years or more after diagnosis
- Type 2 CMML: About 10% of people live for five years or more after diagnosis

Risk of Progression:

About 15% to 30% of people with CMML later develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The rate varies by subtype:

- Type 0 or 1 CMML: About 18% develop AML within five years
- Type 2 CMML: About 63% develop AML within five years

Factors That Influence Your Prognosis:

- Your age
- Other health conditions you may have
- Blood cell counts
- Genetic changes in your CMML cells
- Levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in your blood
- Your CMML subtype (type 0, 1, or 2)

People with MP-CMML (the subtype with high white blood cell counts) are also more likely to develop AML.

Your healthcare team can help you understand how these individual factors apply to your specific situation and what they mean for your outlook.
