What options are available for managing low platelets in CMML-1 besides transfusions?

If your platelets keep dropping with CMML-1, there are several treatment approaches beyond transfusions that may help:

Growth Factor Therapy

Neumega (oprelvekin) is a growth factor that specifically encourages platelet production. This medication can help your body make more platelets naturally.

Chemotherapy Options

FDA-approved chemotherapy drugs for CMML may help normalize blood cell counts, including platelets:
- Vidaza (azacitidine)
- Dacogen (decitabine)
- Inqovi (decitabine and cedazuridine)

While these don't cure CMML, they can help bring blood counts into better balance and reduce symptoms.

Stem Cell Transplantation

For eligible patients, a bone marrow transplant offers the potential for cure. This is typically considered for younger people in good health with a matched donor, or when other treatments aren't working.

Preventive Measures

Your doctor may recommend avoiding NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, as these medications interfere with blood clotting and can increase bleeding risk when platelets are already low.

It's important to discuss these options with your healthcare team to determine which approach makes the most sense for your specific situation.
