Why do platelets keep dropping with CMML-1 leukemia?
When you have CMML-1 (chronic myelomonocytic leukemia), your bone marrow isn't working properly. The bone marrow is where platelets are made, and in CMML, abnormal cells can crowd out the space needed to produce healthy platelets.
As CMML progresses, dysfunctional leukemia cells (called blasts) can build up in your bone marrow. This buildup interferes with normal platelet production, causing your platelet counts to drop over time. This condition is called thrombocytopenia.
Low platelet counts mean your blood can't clot properly, which can lead to:
* Easy bruising
* Bleeding more than usual from small cuts
* Frequent nosebleeds
* Bleeding gums
* Small red spots on your skin (petechiae)
* Heavy menstrual periods
If your platelets drop below 150,000 per microliter of blood, you're considered to have thrombocytopenia. Your doctor may recommend platelet transfusions to help bring your counts up and reduce bleeding risk.
