A recent diagnosis can feel really isolating, especially with something as rare as CMML — so it makes complete sense that finding others with the same condition feels difficult. You're not alone in feeling that way, and many MyLeukemiaTeam members have shared similar experiences.

You're right that CMML is rare. Only around 1,100 people are diagnosed with it each year in the United States. It's most common in men and adults over 60. CMML is a type of leukemia that develops from monocytes, which are white blood cells that help the immune system fight infection. In CMML, the body produces too many immature, abnormal monocytes that don't work properly and crowd out healthy blood cells.
It's worth knowing that CMML actually has subtypes, which can affect symptoms and treatment:
- MD-CMML — Similar to a condition where the body makes too few healthy blood cells. Often causes fatigue, easy bruising, and frequent infections.
- MP-CMML — Similar to a condition where the body makes too many blood cells. Often causes an enlarged spleen, night sweats, and weight loss.
Knowing your subtype can help guide better conversations with your doctor about the best treatment path for you.
