Hello all,
I am on maintenance therapy (methotrexate and mercaptopurine) pills and my liver counts went up. They had me suspend for a week or 2. Can anyone relate?

Susy...it's Reggie again. When my liver counts were up and I had a few other weird side effects, my doc stopped the 150 mg of 6MP, stopped the methotrexate, infusion of Vincristin and oral dexamethasone for a little over a month, then re-introduced 6MP at 100 mg, and the other drugs. He just bumped me up again to 150 mg for 6MP.
Fatigue and mouth problems are my only side effects now.

Yes, this is something others on maintenance therapy can definitely relate to! Elevated liver counts are a known concern with mercaptopurine (6-MP), which lists liver damage as one of its potential serious side effects.

Yes, this is something others on maintenance therapy can definitely relate to! Elevated liver counts are a known concern with mercaptopurine (6-MP), which lists liver damage as one of its potential serious side effects.

Temporarily suspending treatment to let your liver recover is a common approach doctors take. It's their way of protecting you while keeping your treatment on track — think of it as a short pit stop, not a detour. Here's what's worth knowing about this situation:

- Dose adjustments are common — some MyLeukemiaTeam members have had their medication strength reduced, which helped ease side effects significantly
- Always follow your care team's guidance on when to resume — don't restart on your own
- Keep all follow-up appointments so your liver counts can be monitored closely
- Let your doctor know about any symptoms like yellowing of skin or eyes, unusual fatigue, or abdominal discomfort

You're not alone in this, and your medical team pausing treatment shows they're watching out for you carefully.
