Members shared many personal strategies for staying safe in crowded places like Walmart, with most agreeing that wearing a mask is a smart way to protect themselves given their compromised immune systems. Several members described real health scares, including hospital stays for pneumonia and bronchitis, that happened after skipping their mask in a crowd, reinforcing why they now mask consistently. A recurring theme was finding what works best for each person, whether that meant shopping early to avoid crowds, carrying hand sanitizer or wipes, washing hands often, or wearing high-quality masks.

We stay away from crowded places like restaurants and stores. My wife has AML and her white blood cells are always very low. Her immune system is not good and she doesn't need to catch any germs or she will be back in the hospital. Take no chances.

I haven’t worn a mask since Covid started except at oncology appt. I have PTSD and simply can’t. I just make sure to wash hands and keep hands away from my face. I sit and watch everyone taking their masks up and down and then eating. The germs are on outside of mask. If I am in a store and the aisle is crowded I just go to another aisle. Do whatever you are comfortable with. For me it’s no mask.

I have never completely stopped masking and the same with my husband, for my benefit. We always wear them in airports and try to eat where it is not crowded. We ask our kids to do the same when flying to see us. The one time one couple of them forgot, they got sick. We always wear them on the plane and only take them off at full cruising altitude - when the air exchange is best - for eating (cross-Atlantic flights still feed you) or drinking. I wear them in crowded stores or where there will be lines. I ear them in public bathrooms. I have not had a cold or worse since well before the pandemic, before my official diagnosis 2 years ago after they started testing and watching me for half an hour year before that. I truely wish more sick and contageous and coughing people would wear them to protect everyone around them.

My oncologist wants me to wear one on planes, in airports, shuttles, and big crowds. I comply, and have stayed healthy.

I do wear a mask 😷 around big crowds! Self protection☺️. You never know who is sick or is gretting sick and doesn’t know it yet. Holidays can be tricky!!
