FYI “Leukemia belly" refers to abdominal swelling or discomfort caused by leukemia cells building up in the liver and spleen, making them enlarged (hepatomegaly/splenomegaly), leading to feelings of fullness, bloating, and early satiety, often accompanied by other symptoms like fatigue, weight loss, and pain. This enlargement presses on the stomach and other organs, causing these sensations. It’s not due to overeating.

I think I avoided this problem with medication? I would think a doctor noticing this problem would get on the job and prescribe medication to prevent this type of damage? My guess is this occurs when a doctor use wait and watch and who knows what they are eating for and what they want to watch happen during this daring experiment.

How can you manage bloating and digestive issues during the festive season while on Calquence for CLL without avoiding all rich foods?

The good news is you don't have to skip everything! The key is moderation and making some smart swaps where you can.

Here are some strategies to help:

* Focus on portion control using the plate method - fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with lean protein, and a quarter with whole grains
* Choose whole grains over refined carbohydrates when possible, as they're high in fiber and can help you stay regular and avoid constipation
* Include colorful fruits and vegetables at meals to boost fiber and support digestion
* Stay well-hydrated with water throughout the day, which helps with nutrient transportation and overall digestive health
* Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than large heavy ones

For the rich foods you love, enjoy them in moderation rather than eliminating them completely. As one MyLeukemiaTeam member wisely said, "Eat what you want in moderation."

If you're experiencing significant bloating or digestive issues, talk with your doctor. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation with CLL and Calquence treatment.
