I had a bone marrow biopsy a few months ago. No big deal. Your hip will be sore from the needle for a few days. I was worried too
Hi Veronica. I had a bone marrow biopsy in 2006 that confirmed I had CLL. It wasn't really painful. A bit uncomfortable but not seriously so. The area was numbed locally. I felt a bit of pain from the pressure of where the little holes are made so a circle of bone can be removed in order for the hematologist to extract some bone marrow for study purposes. There was a quick sensation when a bit of marrow was "sucked out" but nothing "screaming hurtful" as we see on TV. When it was finished, I drove home without any trouble. That was 20 years, and methods may have been updated and streamlined by today.

I had a bone marrow biopsy in October of 2025. My oncologist sent me to the hospital for the outpatient procedure. They gave me some IV medication for pain as the procedure was starting and were ready to up the dosage if needed. I felt the doctor touch my back, but felt no pain. My wound was more sore than I expected after the feeling returned.
My only caution would be regarding the cost of the molecular labs. Medicare denied coverage of a $8955.00 lab fee. I am still battling with the lab and Medicare concerning that unexpected bill. Blood Cancer United has a Case Managers to help cancer patients navigate medical debt and insurance denials. A case manager is helping me.
A bone marrow biopsy is a common procedure used in leukemia diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and follow-up care. It's usually done as an outpatient procedure — meaning no overnight hospital stay — and takes about 10 to 30 minutes depending on whether it's a biopsy alone or combined with an aspiration.
